How To Pick A Trainer That Is Right For You

One of the most important things when looking to bring in a professional dog trainer is to do your homework first. Researching into a trainers reviews, training approach, qualifications, and evidence of results is a good start and we always welcome these types of questions.

But, there is also another side to this. Dog trainers are also vetting you as clients.

Dog training can be a long journey and the level of commitment and consistency is often far greater than what most people may first think. For dog training to be successful, a client must be open to learning, willing to dedicate the time needed, and have an eagerness to work with their dog. Whether it’s behaviour or obedience, it takes time and commitment.

Opening an enquiry, email or message stating ‘How much?’, with no introduction, context or information is a huge red flag for dog trainers. This shows a total lack of understanding of dogs and their behaviour in general. Comparatively, it’s like asking a personal trainer how much it will be to look like Tom Hardy.

We welcome clients to explore many different trainers to suit their budget, but bare in mind that like most things in life, you really do pay for what you get. We have heard countless stories of trainers barking at dogs to change behaviour, advising euthanasia without ever seeing the dog in person, telling owners to just always avoid their dogs triggers, scruffing the dog, spraying them with toilet cleaner and so much more. More often than not, these trainers are at the very lower end of the industry cost rates. Often resulting in clients spending more money and time in the long run.

When choosing your dog trainer, make sure you click and develop a rapport with them. Be honest about the issues you’re having, what you’ve tried to fix it, and any other information that you think might be relevant. Look at their reviews and contact previous clients of theirs to see how they’re progressing now. Don’t base your decision entirely on cost and distance if you really want the best for your dog.
